Congratulations, parent-to-be! There is so much to be excited about in the weeks and months leading up to the day when you welcome your little one into the world, and you want your loved ones to revel in the excitement right with you. So you’re planning to let them in on a big secret: the sex of your baby.
The decision to announce the sex of your baby is a major one and you want to make sure that the memories you make during your reveal are as unique and meaningful as your growing family. But depending on who you’re sharing the news with and how close or far away they are, you may need to get a little extra creative in your approach.
Here are four creative ways to reveal the sex of your baby to all the important people in your life.
First, Get the Information You Need
Not sure how to pull off the big reveal? It’s easy: while at your ultrasound, explain to the technician that you’d like to have the sex of your baby written down and put in an envelope so you and your partner can open it at the same time. This happens so often, that they’ll likely be familiar with this request and will help keep the baby’s sex hidden while on the screen.
The Moment You and Your Partner Find Out
Beyond the traditional approach—that is, finding out together during an ultrasound—there are other intimate, memorable options for revealing the sex of your baby to yourself and your partner.
Once you have your ultrasound results, head to a local party store, and ask the employee to fill two large black balloons with pink or blue confetti, depending on whether you’re having a boy or a girl. Then, have them fill the balloons with helium, tie them with string, and bring them to you and your partner. If you’re nervous you’ll accidentally peek, enlist a trusted friend to place the order and pick up the balloons for you.
From there, it’s up to you and your partner where you want to be when you pop the balloons and find out whether your little one is a boy or a girl! Maybe it’s best celebrated with dessert?
Not into balloon popping? If you’ve picked a boy name and girl name before the ultrasound, have the ultrasound technician write down the name of the baby. Then, bring it to an embroidery shop and have them embroider the name on a simple white onesie. Have them wrap it, and once you bring it home, you’ll know both the name and the sex of your future baby!
Involving Children in the Big Reveal
If you have little ones in your life who will be welcoming a sibling into the family, why not surprise them with something sweet? Gender reveal cupcakes are a fun way to reveal the sex of your baby to children. These can be bright and colorful cupcakes which, when cut open, reveal a blue or pink core. Pro tip: catch their reaction on camera!
If your children are good secret-keepers, baking and decorating gender reveal cupcakes together can be a great way to help involve them in spreading the good news. Why not have your little ones help you make some cupcakes that you can serve at your next party? Here is a great recipe to help get you started.
Even if they aren’t the best sharers, you can still involve them in the fun. Let them help you bake the cupcakes and scoop out some of the core. Then, you can fill the cupcakes yourself later with the colored frosting, and you don’t have to worry about them ruining the big surprise to the rest of the extended family and friends!
Fun for Your Close Family
Did you know that you could make scratch tickets by hand? Not only is it a fun project, but it’s a great way to announce to family near and far that you’re having a little girl or boy! Design a themed scratch-off card that encourages the recipient to take a guess as to the sex of your future little one. Then, whatever they scratch off will tell them if it’s going to be a girl or a boy.
Not one to take bets? Purchase or DIY some confetti poppers. At the count of three, everyone can pull the string and shoot colored confetti into the air to find out whether you’ll be adding a boy or girl to the family at large.
Your Friends Will Want a Reveal, Too!
Who doesn’t love a treat? Gather your closest friends together for dinner to celebrate the addition of the newest member of your crew. Once you’re together, have your friends take turns guessing whether you will have a boy or a girl.
From here, you have a few options for announcing the sex of the baby to your crew. If you’re serving drinks, give everyone a straw that will change colors when they put it in a cold beverage. For dessert, distribute donuts filled with either blueberry or strawberry jelly to indicate a boy or girl. Or, get creative with it and make homemade fortune cookies that include your baby’s sex on the inside. Dessert has never been so sweet!
Let’s Not Forget Your Social Networks
Are you active on social media? If so, you might be thinking about revealing your baby’s sex to your followers. One great way to bring them along on the journey is to share a video of yourself learning the sex of your baby. This will immerse your followers in the experience alongside you as you imagine life with your new baby boy or girl. Set up a tripod if you’re finding out alone, or enlist a trusted family member to document the event.
Here is another option: post a teaser photo showing your ultrasound and asking followers to weigh in and vote on whether you’re having a boy or a girl. Then, the next day, reveal the big surprise!
Announcing the sex of your baby is a big decision. No matter how you choose to tell your loved ones whether you’ll be having a little boy or a little girl, they’ll be thrilled to share in your excitement as you bask in this news. What’s more, you’ll be drumming up the buzz of welcome for this brand new little one who will enter a world full of love just for him or her.
